Is it a bad sign that my Application of Computers in Agriculture professor has never heard of regular expressions?

(The student next to him kept asking me, "Is that a Microsoft app?" um, no.)

Umm, no, actually I'd say that's a pretty unsurprising sign.

To be honest, regular expressions are something really only Perl programmers and unix geeks know (and half of those still can't make them work right half the time (usually the Perl half)). Lots of perfectly capable computer people have never even heard of them, I'm afraid...

ehhh...probably not. At least in that kind of class. I don't know what the real syllabus is, but I would expect something named "Application of Computers in Agriculture" to be more about how to track crop yields or pH levels in a spreadsheet.

That's what I figured. In fact, there is virtually no agriculture-related stuff involved -- they're teaching us rudimentary Microsoft Office. It's really just Computers For Gardeners. If they were teaching us crop tracking and field analysis, I wouldn't be bored quite so stiff...

I guess the main thing that gets me is that he's so... full of himself. "I know how to use computers, I can do amazing things!" And then he tries to equate a USB port to a serial port (http://luna-torquill.livejournal.com/191293.html). Sigh.

And now for the cheap laugh:

Well, no, but I can see the confusion. For a PERL programmer, /$_[\w\-]+(?:=[\w\-]+|="[^"]*")?$_/io is source code. For a Microsoft programmer, it's a user interface guideline.

Remind me who teaches that?

Dr. Emilio Laca has it this quarter. He's handing it off to someone else for next quarter, can't recall who.

Though, come to think of it, since Laca isn't teaching it next quarter, I might be interested in becoming an intern for 3 credits. Hmmm...
