I looked in the mirror yesterday morning and was trying to figure out what was different when one of
cadhla's posts rang in my head: she had rediscovered her collarbones. Sure enough, I've lost mine.
Okay, that means that not all the weight has been muscle (that is, oddly, a bit of a relief). Time to do something about that, and maybe I can tone up a bit too. So I'm jumping on the fitness bandwagon with everyone else.
No formal diet, though -- I've never needed one in the past, so we'll see whether I can still do without it. I'm under a little less stress just lately, which will make it easier to cut out most of the junk food (you don't want to know what I've been eating), since I'm not craving it quite so much. I'll lean on the sun-tea a bit more as a hydration-option which doesn't involve corn syrup or caffeine, one which I drink in much greater quantities... having quart jars to drink from helps. More veggies and fruit, mostly since I know I should and if I'm taking care of myself it only makes sense. I think avocados are good for me, but when I don't just eat them plain I'll be cutting back to half a 'cado's worth of guacamole at a time so I don't go overboard on the fried chips. That sort of thing.
Mostly I'm focusing on physical activity. My metabolism responds readily to higher activity levels, thank goodness... I'm thinking of ways to do cardio that aren't totally boring, as is bicycling the same length of the canal trail three times a week. I can start bicycling to the farmer's market again (hoping I don't tumble and take my knee out like I did last year). I also have lots of physically intensive gardening stuff that needs to be done, like clearing the plot and digging holes -- that can easily be adapted to keep my heart rate up for twenty or thirty minutes, and I'll be making visible progress to keep me going. I also have a tentative offer of an evening of free gym once a week, and I'll have to see what comes of that.
I have to be careful about exercising outdoors because of the heat, but I'm going to try getting up earlier so that I can do it before the sun really starts beating down. (My gardening hat helps.) If I want to go to the Thursday farmer's market I can do it as the day cools down; a 6:30 run should get me home by dinner.
I've started doing crunches to tone up my abdomen, as I've been meaning to do for ages. I need to find better padding than just the yoga mat on my wood floor, though -- I bruised my hipbones this morning.
Oh, and I'm flossing again. :) Just as a sign that I'm trying to take care of myself in general.
So that's my plan... I'll be posting at least occasionally to LJ to keep myself honest. We'll see whether I can take a little of the padding off and increase my stamina -- I've been noticing that I get tired faster than I used to.
