Waterworks
Jul. 29th, 2020 11:14I went up to see to the water box today. As I thought, the box itself was only a third full, so the problem was upstream... I pulled the hose at the slip point above the intake valve, and found a muddy trickle, then went up to the screen. The screen was putting out a hearty stream of clear water -- the level in the pool is quite respectable -- so back down I went to clear the clogged line. Sticking my finger in to plug the pipe at the slip point and then withdrawing it quickly a few times produced enough suction to bring down a gush of mud, and once it was clear I hooked it up again. The box should be full again by now, and hopefully that will keep it until I can go up and replace the plumbing.
I realized that I'm in a mood to shove rocks around up there. It's needed to be done for months; there are muddy holes that threaten to send you into the creek and high rocks to clamber over, and moving some things around would make a much more stable, dry, and pleasant path to the box and the ford above it. But it's nice to discover that it's one task I'm actually looking forward to, unlike so many necessary-and-rewarding-but-unpleasant things on my list here. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, as I often enjoy rock work, and it's certainly a pleasant setting even on warm days.
I finally turned the toilet off. With a broken float, it's probably better that way; I'll turn it on in a bit to fill, then turn it off again so it doesn't run continually for the next few days. At least the cutoff is new...
There is a chipmunk in the garden. I watched it walk blithely up and sideways on the siding as I sat on the back porch... a few hours later I was sitting there again, and when I shifted position, there was a shriek behind me. Apparently the chipmunk hadn't realized I was there, and had come up behind me on the grapevine... they make very shrill noises when startled.
At any rate, I've closed up the house, and after my therapy appointment I'll take care of some phone calls. It's supposed to be warm but not hot today and tomorrow, then cool down to a partly-cloudy mid-70s the day after and stay there. In Willamina/Sheridan, of course -- I really do need to get a weather station here so that I can really be sure of the differential.
