torquillApparently, in the phone world, the Intercept is so ancient no one is interested in talking about it anymore. As someone who doesn't live on the bleeding edge, however, I still have one, and after a year of ownership I was tired of the bloat and assorted performance issues. I decided to root it and put a new kernel on.
For reference, I'm with Virgin Mobile. The settings menus may be a little different with Sprint, and you must use a different kernel to maintain the right carrier band. This guide should still give you enough to work with on Sprint, however.
It took a day or so of just combing the internet to grasp what was involved... someone mused that there must be a distinct interest in keeping SDX Forums confusing, because otherwise the manufacturers and carriers would have a go-to place for information on how to block people from modifying phones. Whether or not that's the case, it takes a long time for a total newbie to come up to speed on what can be a risky procedure.
The good news is that things have advanced enormously in even just the past year. While I saw plenty of warnings and pleas about bricked phones from the early days of the N1 and Android in general, the tools have evolved to smooth over a bunch of the pitfalls, and there are ways to recover a nearly-bricked phone (though they could involve re-activation by the carrier). This guide covers only the Intercept, which is a bit of an oddball hardware-wise, but the whole field has become rather friendlier to the dabbler.
So, in order to replace the kernel (core operating system) on an Intercept, you must:
1) Gain root access
2) Replace the recovery ROM
3) Install a new kernel
The devil is in the details, of course, but that's the overview. You will need a computer, especially if something goes sideways, and it's often useful to have the Android SDK for things like examining logs on a wedged phone (which can happen even with a bad app install). You need either the USB drivers for the Intercept, or an SD card reader that can handle micro-SD. As the USB drivers are handy even if you just want to put files on your phone, I'll cover that first.
Preliminary: Installing USB drivers on your computer. On the computer, go to the EasyTether drivers page. Select and install the drivers that match your OS; I'm working with a Win7 box, so I got the supplementary Samsung drivers as well. With these installed, you should be able to plug your phone into the machine with its usual USB cable (the one used in the charger), and the computer will recognize it as a storage device. Do a dry run before you try anything more, just to make sure the two will talk.
On to the real work.
Obligatory disclaimer: I am not responsible if you damage your phone by following this guide. It is meant only as a collection of the information and resources already available. Please heed warnings and precautions, and be aware of the risks!
First: gaining root access. Several tools presented themselves. I didn't try Z4, which had a lot of advocates, as its rival SuperOneClick sounded like the easiest to try. SOC is compatible with the Intercept, and I tried it (it needs a computer)... but it hung on the final test after the root exploit, and the rooting procedure itself was incomplete. So I moved on.
What I found was an Intercept-specific tool, Intercept Root Apk and Recovery flasher. It's an app, but one not found in the Market, so the hardest thing about it is getting it on the phone. Fortunately, there is a list of ways in the article to load it onto the phone. What I did was to go into Settings -> "Applications" and check "Unknown sources", which allows me to install non-market software. (Sprint may hide that.) Then I pointed the phone browser at
http://intercept-root.googlecode.com/files/interceptRoot.apk and downloaded the app.
Important: This app has a nonzero chance of wiping your SD card. For safety's sake, back up your SD card first, either by unmounting it, pulling it, and inserting it into a computer, or by hooking the phone to the computer, enabling data access on the phone (click the USB icon in the Notification bar), and copying the files over that way.
Now, if you don't get to the file via the notification bar, go into the Applications list and select "My Files". Navigate to /sdcard/Downloads, and you will find "interceptRoot.apk". Click that and run it.
If you haven't previously rooted the phone, there will be only one button (Root); click it. Simply rooting the phone isn't especially risky -- it just uses exploits to bypass the permissions checks and gains superuser access. It's easy enough to reverse, and rarely causes issues. InterceptRoot will reboot the phone, and it will all look normal. Go into the Applications list and select InterceptRoot again; this time you will have the option to "Flash recovery".
Second: Installing a custom recovery ROM. Flashing ROMs is always a little risky, as success is not guaranteed. Fortunately, recovery mode is not what the phone normally runs on, so if it does screw up, you'll have a chance to fix things (usually by just flashing it again). The recovery mode installed by InterceptRoot is ClockworkMod (CM), one of the best available. I was quite pleased with it, and it comes highly recommended on forum posts. The version I have is 2.5.1.0.
Select "flash recovery" and wait. The phone will reboot again, and it will come up into CM Recovery mode, which is simply text. Navigate by stroking the optical pad at the bottom of the phone, and select by pressing it; Recovery will give you other instructions beyond that.
First, back up your system and data files to the SD card. Select "Backup and Restore", and go with "TAR Backup" (TAR is familiar to any Unix/Linux admin as a standard backup package format). You'll have the option of backing up system, data, or efs (possibly sd as well, if you're plugged in). Back up all three.
Once you're backed up, hit the "Back" soft-button until you're back at the main menu.
You now have a new recovery ROM and permanent root access. If that's all you want (for the ability to delete cruft, change your startup splash screen, and so on), you're done; go ahead and select "Leave recovery" -> "Reboot to system". On the Intercept, I highly recommend a new kernel, however, as it drastically improves performance.
Third: Installing a custom kernel. This is the really risky piece. Don't try this if you're short on time or resources, as the chance of freezing your phone does exist, and you want to have time to thaw it out if that happens.
From the main menu in CM Recovery, scroll down to "Wipe ..." and go to "Wipe dalvik-cache". The kernel package I used apparently takes care of that little bugaboo automatically now, but it never hurts to be sure. Wipe the standard cache as well.
Now you have to get the new kernel onto the SD card. There are two ways to do it: to use an SD card reader, select "Leave recovery" -> "Shut down" in CM. Pull the SD card and insert it into the reader. To copy it over USB, select "Reboot to system" and enable data access on the phone (as in the paragraph on backing up your SD card, above).
There are a few kernel packages out there, though not many for the Intercept. The best one appears to be the Intercept Ultimate Kernel Package (for Virgin Mobile or for Sprint). Make sure you get the right carrier version, or your phone will lose access to the carrier. Copy the entire .zip file into the main directory of the SD card. Just to be sure, back up your SD card files again. Put the card back into the phone if you're using a reader.
Reboot into recovery. From a full shutdown, press Volume Down, Call, and Call End all together for several seconds, until you see the Samsung logo. It should put you into CM Recovery again. Scroll down to "Install zip from sdcard" and select it. Select "Choose zip from sdcard". Scroll down to "crapkernel_vm_package3.zip" or "crapkernel_sprint_package2.zip" and click it. Confirm you want to use that file.
Cross your fingers and wait.
If it returns a success, exit out to the main menu on CM, and select "Leave recovery" -> "Reboot to system". Hold on to something. If all goes well, it should boot up just as it always does. I didn't notice any difference, so the first thing to do is to go into Settings -> "About phone" and scroll down. If the kernel version is something other than the stock Google one (Eclair or Froyo), you're in business! (Mine was "The_Last_Crap")
If it doesn't go well, you have some options. First, shut down, go back to Recovery, and try flashing the kernel again. Shutting down may require a battery pull if you have a bootloop. You can do that a few times, especially if it goes wrong in different ways. Make sure to wipe the cache and Dalvik cache each time, as if the kernel package fails to do it, it can definitely screw things up.
If you still seem stuck, you can try to debug it with the Android SDK (the free Java Development Kit is required, but don't worry about the rest). You can put a stock or near-stock kernel package on the SD card and flash that to get things back to normal operation: I found a good HOWTO for Virgin Mobile and a rather fierce one for Sprint. Or you can try a hard factory reset and see whether that puts your phone back to a pristine state. ClockworkMod Recovery will let you do that.
Flashing stock or a hard reset will delete your data and preferences -- you did back up your SD card before flashing the kernel, right? If the worst happens, a hard reset ought to put you back to square one, on the original Eclair, and you can flash Froyo again or start this guide over, as you please.
CrapKernel is worth shooting for, as I noticed a drastic improvement in responsiveness, redraw speed, and battery life once I switched over. It doubled my battery life, for example. It also allows you to tether; with the EasyTether USB drivers I mentioned in the preliminaries, all you need to do is download the EasyTether Lite app to your phone, plug in a USB cable, and you're good to go.

Edit: The root software takes up some space on the phone's internal memory, and when it has only a piddling 128Mb to start with, that can be a problem. I found I started running out of space pretty quickly, and shifting apps to the SD card can interfere with updates.
Fortunately, CrapKernel has the capability to use the SD card like it does internal memory. Grab an SD card (the one with the phone will work, or you can buy a bigger one for not much). Back up the data on your phone's SD card to your computer, as detailed in the first step above. Then partition the card, using any of a number of partition editors; this covers the basic steps with gparted, this covers using sdparted in great detail. If you feel linux-savvy and have a card reader, you can use plain old fdisk like I did. You want two partitions: partition 1 should be a FAT32 storage partition, and take up most of the card; partition 2 should be at least 512Mb (I used 1Gb), and formatted for either ext2, ext3, or FAT32. Do not create swap, as it's slower than the internal swap and takes precedence. Do not use ext4, as you don't need journaling and it'll shorten the SD card lifespan. ext2 is reportedly the leanest and fastest option.
So, now you have a partitioned, formatted SD card. (If you've done it by a graphical manager, it'll format the partitions for you; if you're using fdisk and need a reminder, the linux commands you need are mkfs -t ext2 /dev/foo2 and mkdosfs /dev/foo1.) Copy your existing data onto the bigger, FAT32 partition. Put the card in the phone, and download Link2SD from the Market. Run it, reboot, and run it again. If it doesn't throw any errors, proceed to click on any apps you want to move, select "Create Link", click OK, and repeat. I didn't move system apps or critical things I might need if the SD card stops working, but that still left a good 30Mb I could move over. It certainly did speed things up.
