Bonus day!
Jan. 12th, 2011 23:02Whereas the weather forecast had said "mostly cloudy" today, I woke up to sun and a nearly clear sky this morning. So I immediately suited up -- before feeding myself or even the cat -- and got the second coat of green done on the bike pieces. They now look ready for clearcoat, woo!
The green paint not only dries very quickly, it's quite hard to the touch, and sanding is a patient affair. That's good; fewer mistakes that way. Ned's told me that this particular paint got phased out with more stringent VOC laws in California, and it's now only available in spray cans (i.e. small quantities). That might explain why it's so quick and durable. I have mixed feelings about loosing those sorts of VOCs, but it really is only small quantities, and the toughness makes me feel good about the real-life wear on the bike.
The color is kelly green, a bit lighter than the original green. It's a bubbly cruiser, though; it should be cheerful and bright. :) Which reminds me, I need to take the decals in to Ned's so I can match the color for the pinstriping.
I had to stop painting and head to Berkeley for the afternoon, but when I came back it was still warm enough to take a shot at the rims with aluminum -- alas, I ran out of that can, and my second can was cold, so I didn't even finish the rims. I sanded the imperfections on the handlebars and book rack, though, so I'm ready any time the weather is.
It may rain tomorrow, but the weekend looks fair and relatively warm. Here's hoping for a rush to the finish line!
