That was fun, let's do it again

It's not too often I'm reading a book for the first time, and somewhere in the middle of it I think to myself, "I can't wait to read this again." The Riddle-Master of Hed struck me that way near the end, and I got a bit of it from This Alien Shore. I have to say, though, I'm enjoying Cordelia's Honor so much I'm almost tempted to start over again as soon as I finish it.

I won't, of course; I try to let enough time elapse between readings that the details are lost to memory, as I enjoy it more when I don't remember exactly what's going to happen. I've been impatiently waiting for The Riddle-Master of Hed to hit that point, and I should be able to get to it before the end of the year (finally)... it's been maybe five years with that one, but it was exceedingly vivid to me. I re-read the Death Gate Cycle every two years or so.

Still, I'll be counting the months before I feel like I can pick up Cordelia's Honor again. I'll get the sequels -- they don't have quite the same characters, but at least the outrageousness of Lois McMaster Bujold's style will still be there. It had me literally busting out in giggles as I read it... every few pages there was a sense of "they did what...? she what?" It's hilarious, without being a comedy. I love that.

Cordelia does appear in many of the 'Miles' books - while never again as a central character, she does get several zingers in.

Well, that's nice to know; Cordelia does have quite a wit. :)

The one I'm going to miss is Vorkosigan (the father, not the Count). She managed to make him quite charismatic, despite not being particularly handsome. I was delighted by his reactions to things, especially when taken off balance. I trust that Miles' charm will be fun too.

Are you referring to Aral (Cordelia's husband), or to Piotr (her father-in-law)?

Miles is . . . a handful. You know that seen at the end of Barrayar? Where Aral or Cordelia complains, "There are 5 of us, and one of him. Why do I feel like we're outnumbered?" Miles doesn't grow out of this phase, at least not for another 20+ years.

Cordelia has one of the best lines (or perhaps situations) ever at the end of Barrayar. I re-read all the Myles' books often and still laugh or tear up at the same moments. The two stories from Cordelia's Honor are definitely some of my comfort reading collection, though. You think you've had a bad day? Try hers.
