Wind turbine progress
Aug. 23rd, 2009 22:49So I have been cranking along pretty steadily on this project, and I just stopped to refine my to-do list... it looks like I should be able to complete in under three days *knock on wood*, which means I'll get some testing time and (probably) enough time to paint it, construct a filter for the alternator, and put a dust-guard on the main hub. Here's hoping!
In case anyone wants a glimpse at what still needs to be done, here's the list:
check alternator it works!
make cutout on trailing edge of blades
grind blades to shape
turn spline to fit alternator
turn pipe for tower mount
weld frame together
weld main hub brace to frame (again)
weld ahahahaha epoxy frame to bearing (to allow the apparatus to spin freely)
weld spline to alternator, with gear on
buy:alternator mounting bolt, tail mounts/screws, tower brackets/screws, additional tower pipe, fasteners for blades, cable and turnbuckles for guywires
buy:JB-Weld, pipe fittings
drill holes in tail and frame
drill holes in rotor and blades
drill holes to mount alternator on frame
mount alternator
mount rotor assembly
balance blades
buy: chain whip, freewheel/cassette tool (fit to existing cassette)
measure position for intermediate hub, adjust axle as needed
cut strut with bandsaw
drill mounting holes in strut and frame
assemble intermediate hub and mount it
clean/lube chain
assemble chains to length
buy:spade connectors, wire for alternator leads (14ga. lamp cord?), molex connectors, switch for field connector, fuse enclosure
wire up alternator, insert connectors for easy assembly/disassembly
drill holes in tower, pass wires through
mount tower brackets on RV
mount blades
mount tail
measure all fasteners to make sure we have what we need to disassemble it with us
tighten everything
test the whole contraption!
Here's hoping -- even if we don't get it painted or shielded before we go, I expect it will be complete enough to take with us, so long as there are no gross flaws. *crossed fingers*
T-minus 6 days, 21 hours.
