I'm making a baby blanket.

I've never made one before, and I never thought I would. Mind you, I've made people blankets, and doilies, and I'm even knitting a balaclava during lecture. But baby blankets?

A friend of mine is having a baby, however, and the shower is tomorrow. Yesterday, figuring I should at least start on making something if I was going to give her a baby present (it's not due for another month yet, I have time), I went out and got a bunch of soft, thick yarn and a large hook. *shrug* I could figure out something, I thought. Babies are an alien species to me, but I know that moms like soft warm things for their aliens, and the mom is more likely to care about color than the alien, so I grabbed colors I thought looked nice together and avoided the pink and yellow yarn entirely. Girl babies don't have to have pink stuff.

I hated all the patterns I saw out on the net, so I'm improvising. It's hexagonal (to be interesting), and it has a dark purple center, light blue middle, and will have a cream-colored edge. It is to be roughly 24" (edges) by 32" (corners), or however large it needs to be for me to feel it's adequate... it's also currently half-done. After only a few hours. Yowza.

It's very thick, and will be very warm. Just in time for spring and summer. Oh, well... I can add on to it if she wants to keep it for a toddler, and I'm sure it'll still be useful.

I'm surprised this is going so fast, though, even with a K hook -- the Homespun I'm using is entirely as annoying as it looked, and I'm having to take the loop off the hook every two or three stitches to sort out the separated fibers. I'm happy with the result, at least, and it is still going quite fast. Looks like it'll be a nice blanket.
