Why is it that every time I'm asked about what would be a good vine/hedge for a privacy screen (invariably in shady or very dry spots), the person becomes visibly disillusioned when they discover it'll take "a couple of years" to actually establish it? What were they expecting, 14 feet in three weeks?

"I'm sorry, sir, no one sells Ultra-Vigorous Drought-Resistant Non-Invasive Kudzu."

*laughs*

In an -online game- we're playing these fantasy 'plants' take about a week to grow, and then bloom and after some days fruit. Many of us are barely patient enough to watch them grow ;)

A couple of years sounds reasonable to me.

A wall of sun parasol might work? But it'd have to be a LOT of sun parasol/mandevilla.

I like the lilacs we planted at our house at regular intervals along the fence. They grew in and created a wonderful privacy screen... 30 years later, when we finally sold the house.

Yeah, that's more like it. As someone else commented, the trouble with shade-loving plants is that they tend to grow more slowly than their sun-loving counterparts. A couple of years is doing pretty well in that category.
