torquill: The dough has gone to war... (baking)

I've decided to make pâte à choux for the tea party Sunday. I've got about five minutes before I know whether this batch is doing what it ought. (I've made it twice before, and the batter behaves differently each time.) You can't peek without ruining them.

They're gluten-free, and when filled with whipped cream, they become cream puffs. Yum. [livejournal.com profile] semy_of_pearls may want to half-dip some in chocolate, too, though I don't really care one way or the other.

The dogwood is not dead, just a bit crispy. I saw green leaves on it today, and watered it. If I can water it dutifully once a week or more, it should recover. One of the jacarandas is also stump sprouting, as I thought it might -- the other is stone dead, but at least one is something.

The nectarine has fruit on it. As I wasn't expecting it from such a tiny tree, they may not amount to much; I would have watered it more if I'd realized.

I spent some time working on the Marianas Trench out there, and got so frustrated and cranky that my dad said he would rent a concrete-buster to finish off the portion of the trench we avoided before (the water pipes were too close to take chances). I really hope I don't have to finish it off with a mattock, because being bent double as I chip at clay and try to keep my footing is not my idea of a good time.

Out they came, medium-brown, shiny little balloons. I pricked them (twice, the holes seemed to seal up after a moment) and admired them. They aren't perfectly round, they never are, but who cares? They're cream puff shells we can all eat. Now more are in the oven, and I need to get my hands all sticky again for the round after that.

I need to learn to have more faith.

*I* would love to dip them in chocolate. I even have an electric fondue pot with which we can do so. I think setting it up as 'dip your own' will be preferred, as MiL is allergic to chocolate. :)
