torquill: Doctor Wilson, thoughtful (wilson)

I seem to have cleared Tier 1; Dr. Kono praised my exceptional lung function and sent me on to their internist. (I'm told he likes puzzles.) I may know more after the appointment tomorrow, which is conveniently scheduled in the last half-hour of Plant Path lab. I usually get out early anyway.

We spent the morning planting out. Not, as I had expected, on our knees... the market garden is about four acres, so a row is long enough to make planting by hand difficult. Instead, we got to mount up on the back of a tractor and feed the hoppers for a mechanical transplanter. (I want one of these!) Other than a little adjustment for depth and spacing at the beginning, it went smoothly, and we got two rows of basil, two of sweet wax peppers, and a row each of kale and broccoli done. The peppers were cranky and didn't want to come out of their cells, so that took longer, and I got to run the little cart to feed them while everyone else was fighting with the transplants.

I really need to put together a set of things for Wednesdays: hair ties, sunscreen, and a hat would be really nice. The weather was hazy, so I didn't feel the lack too much, but even if I get a deep tan as usual I'll need sunscreen by June.

I ended up working with a couple of ladies I know from the co-ops (one of them's Dory, and I can't recall the other one's name). Fun people. Raoul, the teacher, is disconcerting, even apart from the fact that I keep wanting to call him "Brin": he has a tendency to come up and treat us all to an enormously sunny smile, to the point that I start wondering whether he's heard a joke I haven't. He's also very soft-spoken, which hasn't been a problem quite yet, but I'm sure I'll be lip-reading out in the field from time to time.

I'm enjoying the market garden so far... I may volunteer or try to get a job there in the fall.

Otherwise things have been calm; I have Organic Crop lecture in about 20 minutes. In the following weeks I think I'll spend most of the time between noon and 3 at the Bike Church, since it's very close to both the Market Garden and Bowley where lecture is. Hanging at the Church is something I've been meaning to do more of.
