Mostly up-sides today
Feb. 16th, 2007 20:43I rolled for random encounter yesterday and got "cat lady". (No, not crazy, just going along putting out food for the trap-and-release feral population.) She was pretty nice to chat with. Then I went off and Dr. J turned my trainwreck back into a spinal column.
I did a crapload of errands today, including hunting for root barrier material (gotta call landscape supply places now) and getting replacement batteries for my watch and my faithful digital thermometer. It gets used every morning, yet only needs a battery every 18 months or so. Yay lithium.
At the end I stopped by the Verizon store to ask why I can't voice-dial with the phone closed. They looked at me like I was crazy, and hunted, unsuccessfully, for such an option. Then they flashed the firmware with the newest version. I came back after twenty minutes, told the headset "call home" and got "Operation not permitted with flip closed" again. Sigh. Ten more minutes in line before a tech took my phone, plugged it into something or other behind the counter, and went tickety-tickety on the computer for a bit. Then he stripped off its harness, bundled it into a box, and asked for my headset. When he came back, he handed me a shiny new phone of the same model.
A bit more drastic than I was expecting, but I have no complaints (other than the time spent, which was chiefly because they were quite busy). And now I can voice-dial without opening the phone.
I pruned the fruit trees, which I hope to get planted as soon as the soil dries out a little, the potted roses, the maple, and assorted other things. My kaffir lime got frozen pretty badly but not completely, and has enough good wood that it should recover. (It doesn't have to be big.) My kumquat is ripening slooooooowly. And finally I weeded the winter garden a bit, rejoiced in the multiplier onion sprouts, and finished off the bed that's been open all winter. I'll plant broccoli on Sunday.
Nick and I went to see Pan's Labyrinth. It was a great deal darker than I expected -- he had known it was set in post-civil war Spain, but I hadn't. I liked the end, though, and the blood didn't exceed my comfort level more than once or twice. Definitely deserving of an R rating, and fairly thought-provoking besides.
Then I made dinner, which was a simple affair. Yay food!
