Not feeling so hot.

I baked french bread yesterday, and as a starting point it didn't come out too badly. It needs tweaking, starting with a lower oven temperature, maybe progressing to a slightly different ratio of flours. I think what I want is within reach, though.

When I got off the train last night, there was a procession of track crawlers -- maybe twenty or so -- trudging down track 1 toward the bridge. They were hauling various bits of equipment: porta-potties, gas canisters for welding, miscellaneous metal bits. They were followed by a semi which had been hiked up to run on a railway axle, something I had never seen, and it was hauling another crawler. They were all going at about ten miles per hour, one after another, like a string of 25-ton beads. I could hear the long line of cars at the crossing getting irritated and honking their horns.

The crawlers were still there this morning, at the approach to the bridge, parked on track 1. We sat next to them for a few minutes waiting for track 2 to clear so that we could head north. That's how I know that they have large labels stating their weight at 48,000 pounds. (No, they didn't say "maximum load" or anything like that, just "Weight: 48,000 lbs".)

The train was full of gabbling high-schoolers this morning. I felt a little guilty about not reviewing my flash cards as I should do daily, but I wouldn't have been able to concentrate over that anyway. Bah.

Despite the fact that Sundar has taken over Plant Devel, and he'd probably be quite willing to let me knit, I've kept sketching in that class instead. (I found out he's the head of the Plant Bio department when I looked up his full name -- and everybody calls him Sundar, even his email address.) I'm better than I remember, even at animals. I did a decent alligator-esque head, and a sketch of a lion that was so accurate it startled me. I normally suck at cats. I think I can lay that one at Mike Mignola's door, though -- he did a good sketch of a lion's head, and staring at that sketch somehow did more for my skill at drawing them than any number of photographs. I should look at more artists' studies and fewer photos.

I did myself the favor of correcting my tire pressure again; 60psi makes for more vibration, but it does wonders for conserving my energy. It doesn't hurt that it's a beautiful sunny day, so I'm not fighting off the chill as well.

I'm confining my ambitions today to not drifting off into a coma. Dr. J granted me a 7pm appointment to fix my shoulders; I might be worth something after that.
