The tire patch kit does absolutely nothing for me when I manage to blow a valve stem. I do have a spare tube here -- all the way across campus from where the tire went flat. I ended up spending fifteen minutes of my lunch break waiting at the Bike Barn, and the rest of it walking my bike to the ARC.
The Bike Barn is understaffed, which must be why they told me it would be next week(!) before they could do a front tire tube-change. I have almost no experience, and I could probably do it in a half hour to forty minutes. Tops.
Ah, for a valve stem -- wait, the spare has one -- and a stem tool. There lies the rub. I may find out whether I can do it with needle-nosed pliers... of which I also have none, just a pair of vise grips. I can see an expansion of the toolkit in my future.
A two-minute job to change out the valve stem, but the Bike Barn doesn't have them. So here I am, hot and frustrated, killing a couple of minutes before I have to be at lab. No lunch for me.
Good thing I carry energy bars with me, for exactly this sort of day.
