We hooked up the gas tank filler hose and put a little real gas in the tank. (Imagine that, actual gas in a clean tank!)

The battery was bought and installed. No sparks when we connected it, which is a good sign.

More good signs: dashboard lights!

The fuel pump wouldn't start, though. I did hear the starter crank once, so that works, but the fuel pump got pulled and taken apart. It isn't frozen, which is reassuring... but there's an open circuit in there, suggesting corrosion. It's not easy to take apart, either. We can try pulling the fuel pumps from the parts car and the Berlinna to see whether those work.

Before that, though, my dad had a thought -- it's a DC motor, so it has brushes to make contact, little carbon tabs well inside the casing that's so hard to get apart. If the brushes are crudded up, it would interrupt the circuit. It may be that all it needs is a few good whacks and some hand-cranking to clear it enough to start. Once it runs, it'll clean itself (rolling stones and all that). Something to try.

Maybe I'm just getting used to it, but the bad gas doesn't smell so nasty anymore. It smells vaguely spicy, like cinnamon lamp oil.

Oh, and the wheel-well liner I need for my own car runs a whopping $25 from the dismantlers. That would be the difference between a popular modern car and an antique Italian toy where each taillight is worth more than $150.
