Because people never carry expensive electronics to get work done at the meeting which accompanies the barbecue... or get lectured by their bosses if they take their pagers/phones off for the day.

Go ahead and act like a little kid. Bring your squirt gun to the meeting and pretend that nobody ever does any serious work, because with the way the organization operates, I can certainly see how you might have gotten that impression.

(Though lecturing the techies about how expensive electronic devices are never appropriate at outdoor gatherings really does make me itch to brand "clueless" on your forehead. Oh, and the owner is not liable for damages incurred by another person's squirt gun.)

I admit that I'm biased (for multiple reasons). But I also view this tempest-in-a-teapot as validation of my theory that Supersoakers and their ilk are harmful to the entire sport. If your electronics couldn't take a hit from a standard non-stream weapon without losing bluesmoke containment, you shouldn't be using them in an area where people have open cans of soda.

We neglected to remove silverkun's phone from his person before surrounding him and letting loose with five industrial-strength Water Weenies. One of which was the squirt-gun equivalent of a firehose. He was utterly soaked in under two seconds.

He had the presence of mind to fling the phone from him several seconds in, and chewed us out mildly... but the phone was just fine, despite being sopping wet.

I think the techmakers have been actively working to deal with the collision of tech and Supersoaker. Though the arms race continues -- these Weenies are pretty scary.

To be honest, when we did that to him, I wasn't really worried about his cell phone at the time because he usually takes stuff like that out of his pocket when he's sparring with sticks so that it won't get beaten on.. I guess it'd been too long since the last round and he'd forgotten that detail again..

But I also wasn't that worried because most things like cell phones are designed to be reasonably water resistant these days anyway, particularly if they're inside clothing or something. I got utterly soaked at sweetmegumi's birthday party last weekend carrying both my cell phones and they were perfectly fine.

On the other hand, laptops and such are a lot harder to make water resistant, and do require some consideration on the part of the soaker (luckily they're usually easier to see).. Frankly, it doesn't matter whether you think they should be there or not, if there's expensive electronics around where you're flooding people with water, it's your responsibility to make sure you don't damage something important.
