I've gotten a lot done, but feel like there's a lot more to do. I'm in the middle of a bunch of stuff.
The physical hard drive was fine, according to the nifty Seagate diagnostic tools; it's just the filesystem that was hosed (possibly just a bad image). I ended up wiping the disk, then I used fdisk to repartition. It turns out that the OEM disc I got is just a vanilla installation of XP Home, so I installed that, then added a bunch of stuff from the Apps and Drivers CD, like the driver for my wireless card. That's a nice restore setup, much better than the "disk image" approach to bundled software.
So now I have XP installed, with Firefox, Gaim, PuTTY, and the VLC DVD player. I'll worry about the rest later (though I did set up Norton). I allocated ~9G, this install is taking 2.5G (as opposed to the 5.5G it took before wiping the disk), so I have room for more apps.
I started the chicken soup; tomorrow I'll take it out of the fridge, separate the solids from the broth, pick the chicken off the bones, then add that and the second set of veggies to the broth. Season to taste, then throw it into jars and process -- the hour of processing time always seems to cook potatoes to perfection, but it won't expand the wild rice too much. Best to let that soak up the broth after processing, when it doesn't need so much free liquid.
It's supposed to rain tomorrow evening -- I'll take in the cured garlic tomorrow morning. It shouldn't affect the stuff I just pulled and laid out, at least.
I finished the DMZ in the garden, and I outlined the beds. Then I started digging deep trenches for the tomatoes. I'm hoping to get the goodies down where the water goes, rather than on the dry surface... I dumped a bunch of brewer's mash in the first trench, so now I need to get more mash. I should also call up the rabbit place to ask about getting rabbit manure to add. I don't want to burn these plants, but I want a lot more available than the anemic soil we have out there.
The paper wasps are still in the old pea trellis, stubborn as can be... about eight or nine of them. They're being very civil, but I can't remove the last of the dead peas now. I cleaned up as best I can around them, and I'm hoping it won't be a big earwig haven. I did put out some beer traps, mostly to get a feel for the current situation rather than a real attempt to cut down on numbers.
I didn't get over to the Branstads' tonight. Nobody's going to starve, but I'll have a pretty pathetic Tigger asking to be let in tomorrow morning.
I need to write up a list of skills and my "goals as an intern" -- I tried to do that tonight but just couldn't concentrate. Too much going on... it's time-critical, though. I hope I can get that done tomorrow sometime.
I hope that's unloaded my mind enough that I can sleep now. It's not that I didn't get anything done -- maybe I got too much done, or haven't finished enough.
