torquill: Tea cures all ills (tea)

I slept all right, and woke up to a mauve sunrise.

It's been chilly (mid 60s) and dry. I popped new batteries into my hygrometer, and it says 30%, which is normal for a Concord summer; it's about half of the normal humidity here. My sinus passages feel it every time I step outside. I watered a few plants which may be unhappy with the situation, and Jenny went out to put a slow trickle on the grapes. The sun has been coming and going, and right now we just have a uniform golden glow from above.

At least the smoke is over us now, rather than around us. I can barely even smell it, and the ridges are clear. The wind still whips up occasionally, and we haven't lost any trees, but I've heard the local news reporting highway closures due to downed trees in the valley (highways 101 and 99, among other smaller ones). Highway 22 was closed because of a rash of small fires last night -- that's the road from Salem to the coast, joining with 18 at the foot of Willamina proper. Conrad had said he might come out today, even though I'm not doing the beaver dam as planned... I wonder whether he should be keeping off the roads.

With Jenny's advice, I cooked a couple of sweet potatoes and some penne, in preparation for possibly having some cold meals if the power goes out. If the power is still on this evening, however, I think I will make a hot meal, because it feels so chilly out.

It honestly reminds me of either late fall in California, particularly with an extended fire season (I vividly remember the horrible fires in November, when it was cold and smoky) or Burning Man when Yosemite was burning. The dry cold feels so alien to this place, and the weird lighting isn't helping.

I'm staying inside, and I keep thinking I should record another chapter for Librivox, but I haven't been able to settle. I have no real appetite for my lunch.

All we can do is wait it out, and hope the damage isn't significant around here.
