I went shopping today. I hate clothes shopping, usually, and I only go for what I know I need... today it was jeans, and bras.
The jeans are usually pretty easy, since I wear men's jeans, but in a fit of temporary insanity I thought hey, what would happen if I tried some of the women's styles? They never made it off the rack, of course... Have I mentioned how much I hate the sizing system for women's clothing? How much I hate the arbitrary number which is never consistent between styles even within the same brand? At least shoes are reasonably uniform within their numbering system, in both sexes...
I didn't even bother to try them on because I could tell by looking that none were wide enough. That was in "Misses". There are no jeans in "Women's" in JCPenney, and my experience at other places is that I have a choice between toothpick and tent. With, I might add, no sane sizing system (hate hate hate). So off to Men's again...
One pair of Levi's 505s, one pair of Arizona Relaxed Fits, and three trips to the dressing room later (yup, up another size again, argh) and I have another set -- on sale, which helped. I want to try the (cheaper) Arizonas, as I've been with Levi's for a long time and they have gotten pretty expensive. I'm just hoping I don't jump yet another size to 44/30, as I don't think that's a standard size... I had a bit of trouble finding the 42/30's. I just keep getting wider in the hips and thighs, and I'm not sure much of that can be helped.
Coming out of the dressing room in the Men's section was entertaining -- I startled a man coming in, who blurted, "oh, this one's for girls?" I replied, amused, "I don't think there's a sex involved." So long as there are doors, sir...
On to the underwear section. I haven't worn a brassiere in about four years, so I am very glad
eyeofcanaan lent me one this spring and discovered that I've gone up a cup size. Meh. So... the hunt for a cotton bra went very well, apparently people have discovered that there is a market for underwear which breathes and doesn't get clammy halfway through the day. Not to mention that synthetics make me itch. I came away with two which were (*gasp*) really comfortable. Honestly so. I can sense Lucifer putting on a sweater...
My only question: what possesses people to make underwear which creates totally unnatural shapes from women's body parts? Breasts, to my mind, are supposed to be round. Ellipsoid, perhaps, but round (at least by the time you get to a D cup). I burst out laughing when I tried on one style and got the Madonna tits -- perfect cones, complete with points. You could poke an eye out with those!
At any rate, now I have something to wear under some of these dresses I dance in... at least one really needs some sort of shaping underneath to make the dress hang correctly. I looked for a corset, even ended up at the Walnut Creek Victoria's Secret, but was told that my best bet was in catalogs... or if I want to try them on, try Nordstroms, or bridal supply stores. I like the latter option -- they'd have to have something with sufficient boning to winch brides into these impossible dresses. :) Plenty of support for dancing.
Of course, given my experience and budget, I'm thinking about asking for a bit of advice from a friend or two so I can make my own. I don't think a basic corset requires anything fancier than a standard sewing machine, and I can handle fabric well... I need to drop a line to a few people and see who's the least busy.
The time is coming when I will need to find someone to shop with, to take the edge off the annoyance factor... I will want to get something other than just jeans and white shirts before Midsummer or so, I'd guess.
eyeofcanaan? What do you think?

Date: 2005-03-21 20:51 (UTC)I'm all for it. Down here at the Backhawk Mall, you can get VERY nice clothing that's on sale for $8.00 or less. (I'm specifically talking about Godshalks. Yes, believe it or not.) You have to come see.
