torquill: A sweet potato flower (gardening)

Today, I went to Greg's place to make a bit of progress on it. It's been a couple of months, now, what with the rain and the bike. I weeded the unmulched strips a bit, cleaned up, and pulled another wheelbarrow's worth of river rock out of the old juniper bed. I listened to three Doctors in the process (one of which ended up singing a very silly rendition of "I Am The Very Model Of A Gallifreyan Buccaneer".)

It turns out that 30-year-old junipers do not recover from being cut to the ground; the stumps have aged and gotten friable, and will eventually rot where I don't pull them out. I'm glad I don't have to keep battling those.

I now have a wheelbarrow full of sifted rocks to advance the footpath with, and another five feet of juniper bed fixed up and mulched down to the sidewalk. Looks good. I hope I can work on it a little more tomorrow before the rain comes: wash the rock, put down newspaper, and finish off another six feet of footpath. Maybe lay another couple of stepping stones as I go.

The crocus are finally starting to emerge -- high time, as we already have narcissus blooming here. I suppose it was a function of planting a little late and having first-year bulbs which have to establish roots first... they should take off once spring arrives, though. That'll be something.
