He can be quite pragmatic, I agree. He's also brought out more of the tendency toward noble sacrifice, without having to turn it into a huge dramatic production (as the 6th always seemed to in the TV production). I've noticed him throw himself into the teeth of the monster without fanfare on at least one audio drama, without huge grand speeches or mugging to his companion's wailing and gnashing of teeth -- he says it's the right thing to do, and does it. So much for the coward. :)
It is the same base personality, which is why it's possible to draw parallels between regenerations. He has a deck of morals, guiding principles, and character traits, which get shuffled each time... but they're all still there, just to different degrees. Rashness vs. patience, cleverness vs. compassion, and so on -- it means that with every regeneration, we learn more about the depth of the Doctor's character, and it's even retroactive so it enriches the way we see previous incarnations. What a great way to develop a character.
