One very happy geek
Feb. 28th, 2008 19:36I got a little package in the mail today. UPS stuffed it in the mailbox, which puzzled me for a little bit as I hunted around for the parcel that was listed as "delivered". They're not supposed to do that. :)
I used up daylight hours to unpack it, which (in this season of spending every available moment in the garden) says a great deal about its importance.
My first thought: it's really small. It fits in the coin pocket of my jeans. I now have a little, bitty, shiny, kickass mp3/mp4 player. This makes me happy.
The sound quality is phenomenal -- I actually had to turn the bass down from the factory settings, which is almost unheard of when I'm wearing headphones (as opposed to listening to a full stereo). It has a serious kick to it, and decent clarity once I figured out the sound options. And boy, there are a lot of options. It's going to take me a while to learn what it can do. The FM radio works beautifully -- I never realized how much of a difference a digital tuner makes -- though I haven't tested its recording capability yet. The controls and menus are simple and intuitive, and the slider bar is no problem for a long-time touchpad user.
It acts like a USB hard drive when I plug it in, which makes things simple. It came with half a charge, probably about 10-12 hours worth of play; I'll plug it in via USB overnight, which will give it more than its required 3 hours of charging time. For the moment, it sounds absolutely incredible, and plays the huge AfterHoursDJs files flawlessly. (I will admit, I'm using the $20 noise-reducing headphones from Best Buy right now -- I haven't tried the ones that came with it.) I'll have to figure out whether I feel comfortable riding my bike at school while "deaf", as the headphones I'm using double as earplugs; I may have to refrain from mixing music with traffic.
So I have portable music, and a sweet kitty asleep on my bed, and seeds sprouting in the light rack, and the melon bed is dug. I'm going to go have dinner. Life does have its up sides sometimes. :)
