I've been out of touch because I have two midterms today. Thankfully, one is a take-home, but it isn't the one I'm worried about. So I've been spending almost every waking moment studying biochem, trying to memorize all of the enzymes, intermediates, and reactions of glycolysis and the Krebs cycle. To give you an idea of how much that is, even when I'm looking at a cheat sheet it still takes me at least fifteen minutes to write out both cycles.
I don't feel quite ready -- there are a lot of molecules I have to think hard about before I can come up with the structure, since they're all common names (argh). But while I may not be able to snap my fingers and immediately write out the structure for succinate, I know that succinate dehydrogenase uses FAD to create fumarate, and I know the structure of that one. So I do know enough to fill in most of the blanks. As long as he doesn't want to know too much about the second half of glycolysis...
I've determined that I ride my bike differently than just about everyone else here. I think it's because I am, first and foremost, a driver rather than a bike rider. It means that I lack that defining arrogance that has other bikers heading straight into an intersection and assuming they'll just dodge the cars... I know how nervous that makes drivers, so I actually stop at stop signs. The fact that many drivers don't believe I'll stop even when I have a foot on the ground shows how much of a minority I'm in.
I won't be starting on the take-home exam until after the biochem exam, I suspect. I hope it doesn't cost me too much. It's due tomorrow at 5pm, and I was planning on coming up to go to the bike church anyway... we'll see how it all works out.
