A momentary introspection
Aug. 29th, 2006 19:58I had forgotten how dark The Division Bell is... It's been about ten years since I listened to it last, though, and I find that I like the album as a whole better than I used to. Back then it seemed slow and annoying; now it feels melancholy, and the guitar riffs are comforting after having grown up with A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
I guess Pink Floyd has never been cheerful, exactly -- Momentary had its moments of death and despair too. Division Bell really drove home to me how they often sing about terrible things that happen/are done to people; there is an element of hope ("Keep Talking"), but when I contrast the soaring music of "Take It Back" to the words, there's a feeling I'm seeing the darker side of human nature wrapped in a sugar-coating of pleasant sounds.
(One of my favorite songs from Momentary is "One Slip", which is also a beautiful song about despair. I don't know why I'm so surprised.)
I still really want a good-quality copy of the music video of "High Hopes", which had some of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen. I bought Division Bell for that track, and somehow I had forgotten that it's a wistful cry for the past, for childhood. I guess I had to be a certain age for it really to click with me (older than seventeen, anyway). It's heart-rending now.
I've heard that MTV is going to offer older music video downloads. Might be worth a look.
