torquillI've been figuring I'll take the train up to Davis most of the time. I do drive a lot, but that's mostly to places where it would take me ages to get there by transit, if I could get there at all. (Lousy East Bay transit...) The train is prompt and takes me straight from Martinez to six blocks from campus, plus there's no parking fee (Davis wants something like $130 per quarter for parking). I can live without my stereo, I suppose...
I've been looking over fares, and it turns out that if I get a two-day per week schedule as I'm hoping, at two round-trips per week it makes the most sense to get the commuter 10-pack. I'd get five round-trips (2.5 weeks) for $16.80 each. It's about 100 miles, give or take, so at $3/gallon for gas the same trip in the car would cost $10 plus wear and tear.
(Then I figure in parking costs, and any finacial advantage to driving evaporates...)
If I were to have to commute four days a week, I'd get the monthly pass, but for two it doesn't make sense. At four days, I'd start looking for a place to live up there anyway.
Almost $35/week seems like a lot to me. I'm supposed to get a decent amount of financial aid, and I guess I know where a chunk of that is going, now. Transportation and books.
I've got to figure out my schedule tonight, see whether I can compress it well enough given my low reg priority.
