jiggety jig.

Two days in the south bay went very well. I had two nights in a hotel with [livejournal.com profile] emmett_the_sane all to myself, plus a goodly chunk of time in the middle to run around and get things done. I do wish he hadn't been in pain the whole time -- no, not my fault -- but we both had a good time regardless.

During the day on Thursday I headed up to Ohlone College, in the hope that I could use their library in lieu of the local ones. Ohlone isn't too far from Sunnyvale, so I arrived in upper Fremont in good time and got myself a day parking pass. Nice campus, for the most part, but boy do you have to be in shape -- lots and lots of stairs. It didn't help that the library is on the third floor of its building...

Decent library. Threadbare, shabby, and funky as all public and community-college libraries seem to be (even DVC's shiny-new library still has that aura of wear), but well-equipped with full stacks and lots of study cubes. I even found a cube with power after a bit of hunting. They had enough books that I could write down references for my paper (I looked through them, but not being a student I had to leave them there), public net-equipped computers where I could download Putty to them and do my essential email duties, and a cube where I spent four and a half hours reading books and writing my intro until I was faint with hunger. Definitely serviceable; I will have to remember Ohlone for future endeavors south of the Sunol Grade.

So, hungry, I prowled a little and decided to head for the Hub. I mean, I haven't run around Fremont much at all in recent years ([livejournal.com profile] knaveofhearts keeps heading into Union City instead *shudder*) so, well, the Hub is a good bet for finding food and maybe an ATM to give me cash. Right?

Nobody told me what state the Hub has been in lately. Boy howdy. If I ever needed evidence that Fremont is suffering, the Hub and the streets around it (paving, where art thou?) supplied it handily. I really wanted some sort of Mexican food, but I finally settled for Chili's because I was really starving. A large lunch later, supplemented with Coldstone, and it was 6pm and time to head back to pick up [livejournal.com profile] emmett_the_sane from work.

I had Banana Leaf for lunch today -- I had never been there during the lunch rush and wow... when it takes 15 minutes to get a seat for one, I don't have to worry about their financial health. :) Then I came home and have been kind of settling back in. Content, yes. These past two days were very good and happy and comfortable, and now I'm back home where I can snuggle up with the Weasel.

To-do list in a bit... I'm almost ready to tackle the rest of my life again.
