Nothing new under the sun

It wasn't nearly as hot today. I spent three and a half hours in the Market Garden, picking all sorts of things for the CSA baskets; by the time I was starting to get lightheaded, it was time to go. I think I might have slightly crispy arms despite my sunscreen, though.

I chatted about plant path with a farmer who was helping us weed the sweet corn; she drives to Davis from close to Redding, to attend the farmer's market. I asked how long a drive that was, and she said 40 minutes. Odd to think that her commute isn't any worse than mine.

On the way home I got cut off by an anhydrous ammonia truck. I'm reminded of firestrike's comment about being grateful just to survive the day (though, thankfully, there didn't appear to be a bad valve on the truck, nor is NH3 explosive).

Life is pretty good.

Davis to Redding is 150 miles. They must not be enforcing speed well on I-5!

My geography isn't quite good enough that I could come up with what the distance really is; being even that far north of home skews my estimates. It did sound strange, though.

I grew up near Redding, and my sister went to Davis in the sixties. I'd say that it's forty minutes from Redding to Corning.

Or maybe by "near Redding," she means "north of here, up thataway, maybe almost to Tehama County." :)

That meshes with my memory. I recall coming back from Olympia a couple of times... we'd pass Redding, realize (as we did so) that it might be time for lunch soon, and then we'd drive through Red Bluff where there was nothing much to eat. The long drag of driving through scrubby brushland on an empty stomach, before we got to the Iron Skillet in Corning, was something I have vowed not to do again. :)

I tend to forget exactly how far north Corning actually is, though. It's a lunch stop on the way up too, but I have to remember to leave by nine if I don't want to starve first.

Until I was 7 or so, I thought the bay area was just south of Red Bluff because we didn't have air conditioning, and spent long summer vacations in the bay area. Mom would toss us in the very back of the station wagon with blankets and pillows, and we'd nest up and sleep (we didn't have seat belts to ignore, anyhow) until we always woke up in time to see the Mothball Fleet and the C&H factory. Once we got a car with a/c in the early seventies, it became a long "are we there yet?" trip. Dunnigan? What's this Dunnigan place? Orland?

Back then, too, you always knew when you were approaching Vacaville because it reeked of onions. I sort of miss that smell. :D

I came into work today, took one look at Tony and said, "You look like a lizard!!!" He has a crew cut, and spent last week in Mexico. Apparently without enough sunscreen.

People with short (or thinning) hair rarely realize that scalps will burn too, given enough sun.

Of course, if someone could invent a hair-friendly sunscreen it might add a bit of incentive to apply it more often.
