torquillA little sore, a little bruised, kind of scratched-up, and tired. That was a long -- but satisfying -- weekend.
Of the two of us, I think the blackberry bush got the worst of the fight. It's trellised now, and gets to brood and plot revenge for next year. Meanwhile it should be much easier to pick berries this summer. My forearms already look better than they did, though I'm hoping that the thorn I can feel embedded in my shin is just my imagination.
I get to play stump-the-TA today during lunch... I want to know the mechanism behind the first gluconeogenesis process, converting pyruvate back to phosphoenolpyruvate. It's complex enough that I don't expect he'll know it -- in that case, I'll ask Abel after class. Tish always used to tease me about focusing so hard on mechanisms, but when given a long string of reactions to remember, it's how I understand it best. I learn the dance more easily when I can see the feet of the dancers.
I have a week to grasp the Calvin cycle, gluconeogenesis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and lipid metabolism. I'm going crazy here. The plus side is that I have a pretty firm grasp of glycolysis and catabolism, which I knew so sketchily for the last midterm. I realize in the middle of this I'll have a test in Plant Devel, but somehow the basics of phyllotaxy and root growth don't seem nearly as compelling. Maybe it's because I learned most of it last quarter.
All I can do is keep running over the pathway maps and do my flashcards daily... I hope to do at least as well as I did for the last exam, since he keeps reminding us this one's going to be harder. The same score will be worth more this time around.
