Logistics: scenarios
Okay, here's the "possible moving scenarios" post. So much is undetermined, or flexible, or just plain unpredictable, that I'm going to try to lay out the possibilities.
Variables:
- Surgery date (and subsequent recovery window)
- Going up in fall, or in spring
- Fire season duration in California
I may end up living with Jenny for some period of time, especially since the Red Barn will take a bunch of cleanup and work to make it acceptable. Figure on having a work party next spring whether or not she moves in for the winter.
Original scenario:
I go up in late April/early May to get sheep, stay a week or so, then repeat last year: go up in June, then go up to stay from late July through October, butcher the sheep, come home for the winter and have surgery, and head up there with a packed van in March.
The biggest flaw with this plan was that it depended on Jenny being up there alone for another winter, a situation none of us are comfortable with now. I'm installing security cams, but if she's still on her own we'd rather she be staying down at the Red Barn next winter -- the cameras could be used to keep an eye out for burglars and squatters, but there are other issues with leaving the house vacant for the winter (including rodents, ensuring pipes don't freeze, and the feral cat). We could potentially look for a house-sitter, but staying over the winter in a remote house with possibly weeks of no electricity would take a hardy soul indeed.
Current Scenario:
March trip, late April/May trip, then surgery in May or June. Go up for the late summer at the end of July -- if necessary, drive up at the four-week recovery mark and take it easy for a week or two. Come home sometime in October, depending on the rains (hopefully they won't be incredibly late), pack up the car and van, and move up by mid-November.
There are two major variables here, the surgery date and the California fire season/rainy season. I can survive a week of bad air if I'm careful; if I pre-pack during the early summer (around surgery) I should be able to rent the truck and toss 80% of my stuff into it immediately. My hopes for winter in Oregon are the converse of those for California: that it doesn't start too soon.
I'll miss the holidays in this case. If the weather looks dry in November, I *might* be able to stay for Thanksgiving, but I feel like that would be pushing it. This also depends on whether Jenny has been moved down the hill. I need to remember to factor in the timing for the sheep, as well -- whether to butcher them in October before I leave, or try to overwinter them and butcher them in winter or spring. A lot of that plan would depend on butcher schedules, fodder prices, and the state of the pastures.
Worst Of All Worlds Scenario:
March trip, April/May trip, wait endlessly for health insurance letter, spend late summer in Oregon, come home in mid-October, have surgery, move up after Thanksgiving during a slim window between chains advisories in the Siskyous. Or...
Poor Kitty Scenario:
in the event that Dr. Mosser's partner gets hit by a bus, spend late summer in Oregon, come home and do the moving thing, then install Jenny at the house again or get a feral-sitter and return next spring (with cat) for surgery. That requires moving Charlotte a lot, and delaying my official change of residence, but it is feasible. I might be able to minimize my time away by securing a friend to help take care of me in Oregon for a couple of weeks.
