Lunchitude

I went to Kathmandu Kitchen, which my Hindi labmate recommended.

It's Nepalese rather than Palestinian, so it was a little different than what I'm used to. I didn't dislike anything I tried (though I know better now than to try things like saag paneer), and overall I made a good meal out of $10 with tax and tip.

Pluses and minuses:

+ They had salad, which I was almost craving.
- They had no markings as to what might be salad dressings versus sauces. I recognized the chutney, and the yogurt/cucumber dip that I'm not fond of, but otherwise the liquidy things were all nondescript.
+ Fortunately, the lettuce and cucumbers were flavorful enough on their own.
- They had no daal.
+ They had lamb curry.
(Okay, so daal is a really big staple for Indian restaurants and for me as well, but... lamb! Even if it was closer to mutton, still... Lamb! After several buffets where the only meat was chicken, this tradeoff was kind of a wash.)
- Everything was pretty salty. I tend to watch out for that, since I have to buy water on campus.
+ Their rice had cloves in it. Added to the cardamom, it put me in a holiday mood.
- They swapped out the seasoned rice for plain white in the middle of my meal. Sigh.

The seasonings were pretty good -- I ususally find more things I don't like the taste of -- but it was all quite mild. Sure, buffet and all that, but I can't help thinking that if Daawat did a buffet, they'd have to watch out for the food burning its way through the steam table. This stuff was maybe a tenth of the heat of Daawat, which [livejournal.com profile] knaveofhearts will be able to understand. Translation: not very.

Three Indian places, no clear winner, but no clear loser either.
